Do you swear a lot? Are you always up late? Is your house a disorganised mess? Well, get ready to be happy because a new study shows these are the traits of a person with higher than usual intelligence.
The study was conducted by psychologists Kristin L. Jay, an associate professor at Marist College, and Timothy B. Jay, a professor emeritus at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.
They found that individuals who have a tendency to use curse words generally have high fluency in all other categories of speech.
Their findings showed that it is irrelevant which words you choose to use from either slang, curse words or ‘normal’ everyday words.
It’s been long said that people who frequently swear have a limited vocabulary, however, this study shows that people who use those everyday words along with slang and curse words actually have a wider vocabulary than those who refrain from cursing at all.
Another study (PDF link) suggests that night owls may have higher IQ’s than the average person.
Psychologist Satoshi Kanazawa recruited over twenty thousand students to take part in his study. The students were interviewed and given an IQ test.
Five years later Kanazawa interviewed the students again and performed a second IQ test.
He found that students with higher intelligence were more likely to wake up later and stay up later than those who scored a little lower on the intelligence quotient tests.
The final study was undertaken at the University of Minnesota. Psychological scientist, Kathleen Vohs found that highly intelligent people are less concerned with the organisation of their belongings or schedule, which apparently frees up thoughts for more creative endevours.
“Disorderly environments seem to inspire breaking free of tradition, which can produce fresh insights. Orderly environments, in contrast, encourage convention and playing it safe.” Vohs said.
